Fly into Christmas at the Big Switch On

A magically festive show is set to fly into Mansfield Market Place for the annual Christmas lights switch on.
The Big Switch On 2016 will take place on Sunday 20 November in Mansfield town centre, featuring guest celebrities from the Palace Theatre’s pantomime, Peter Pan, and a day of free entertainment for all the family.
This traditional event marks the opening of Santa’s grotto in the Four Seasons Shopping Centre and the start of late night shopping every Thursday from 24 November.
The Snowman™ will be making personal appearances at intervals throughout the day and may also be available to have a selfie with.
Mansfield BID will be running a Tinker Bell themed treasure hunt with prizes to be won, and there will be a spectacular stage show, including performances by local groups and special headline act playing your favourite Christmas hits to get you into the festive spirit.
Meanwhile get ready to take a celebrity selfie as stars of the panto will be making appearances, including the panto baddie Captain Hook, played by Marc Baylis, known for his role as ‘bad boy’ Rob Donovan in Coronation Street, who said: “I am really looking forward to playing Captain Hook – I am going to have a riot!
“There will be no limits to my Hook! I have a history of playing pretty evil characters so I have plenty to draw on for this role.”
Marc revealed that it was the part of Captain Hook which drew him to perform in Mansfield. “To be honest I was looking forward to having Christmas off, but when this part came up, it was impossible to say ‘no’.”
Other recognisable faces include Holly Atterton, from Go! Go! Go! on Nick Jr., who will be playing the bubbly role of Tinker Bell, and Adam Moss as Smee.  He returns to the Palace Panto line up after playing Silly Billy in Sleeping Beauty two years ago.
The switch on event will be bigger and better this year with exciting festive activities taking place near the library from 11am, provided by the Four Seasons Shopping Centre.
The Four Seasons popular Buzzy B Club will also be running from 11am to 3pm inside the centre with a Peter Pan finger puppet making activity. And finally Santa himself will make an appearance at the stage show to wish all the boys and girls a Merry Christmas. He will help start a magical firework display at the stage show in the Market Place from 3pm.
Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Holder for Public Protection, Mick Barton, said: “This will be a fantastic fun family occasion and a wonderful way to hail the season of goodwill so don’t stay at home - come along and get into the true spirit of Christmas in Mansfield.”
The event is being organised by Mansfield District Council with Four Seasons Shopping Centre, Mansfield 103.2, Mansfield BID and the Palace Theatre.
