Four Seasons’ community initiative is a huge hit

The Mansfield shopping Centre is celebrating the success of – The Hive – its very own community space which first opened its doors in  September last year.

Since opening it has welcomed numerous local organisations and charities for free to deliver more than  30 different activities in the hub, including Age Friendly Nottinghamshire (AFN), which is about to launch its new initiative – 50+ Coffee and Catch Up Groups at The Hive.

This brand-new concept by AFN has been set up to tackle loneliness and isolation in the area by organising inclusive events designed to support and empower individuals.

Rob Bryant, AFN neighbourhood coordinator, said: “Our 50+ Coffee and Catch Up is just one example of how local residents can take the lead to deliver new groups and activities, which will help connect their communities, improve independence and increase social networks.

“Four Seasons’ The Hive has been vital in providing a regular place where older people can meet, catch up and support each other, as well as offering a valuable social opportunity in the heart of Mansfield.”

Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society (MSAS), Rohingya Crisis Appeal, Vision West Notts College as well as local MP Ben Bradley are other such groups which have been able to utilise The Hive. Numerous fundraising events, community get togethers, charity bake sales and awareness workshops for young people, and even the centre’s very own kids’ club have all been hosted there.

Rebekah O’Neill, Four Seasons centre manager, said: “We are committed to our local community and delighted to be able to provide The Hive as a free community space right in the middle of our town. We’re delighted that we’ve been able to support so many local groups and enable local people to have a place to come and meet up. We are delighted that AFN has found it to be of such value in launching its brand-new scheme and that we are able to provide a warm and friendly environment.

“Over the last eight months we have had great fun working with a variety of organisations, each wanting to engage with the general public in many different and creative ways. It has been a privilege for the centre team to be able to assist them in their work, as well as building fantastic relationships with their representatives – We’ve met some amazing people.”

The internal layout of The Hive has been specifically designed to offer the perfect relaxing setting and consists of a breakout area with sofas and a TV, a dedicated children’s zone, several desks for people to work on as well as lockers and a small kitchen.

Mansfield MP, Ben Bradley, believes The Hive is a great community resource for Mansfield, he said: “I’m really pleased to hear that The Hive has been such a success since it opened last year. Positioned in the heart of the town, it is always open and available for local groups and organisations to use. I’ve hosted a number of my public ‘Meet Your MP’ events there to chat with shoppers and constituents, and I hope to continue using it in the future.

“I absolutely recommend that any other local groups or organisations look into using it too.”
